After saving for ten years š°, this Cherry Hill š family's šØāš©āš¦āš¦ $150,000 home š remodel had gone horribly sideways ā . Their contractor š¦¹, a licensed and insured company from Philly who promised an "affordable" remodel, had worked for six months in their home, then received the final payment and **abandoned the job** with almost $15,000 š°š°š° of work still not done. Their lawyer ā said it would cost more than was stolen šø to pursue justice across state lines. So much for "affordable"...
That's when they called The Dapper Doer šØāš§ š§°šŖ to be sure they didn't get cheated again!! They had 5 projects for us to tackle over a one month period. So this is a multi-post series that shows the highlights.
Door Casing/Frame Gaps & Newel Post Gap
After the runaway remodeler šāāļø replaced the old, thick hardwood flooring with LVP (luxury vinyl plank), the customers noticed sizable gaps at the bottom of all the decorative door trim ("casings") and door frames ("jambs"). He told them he hadn't budgeted to repair those problems because they were "unforeseeable" š¤Ø š« š¤¦āāļø. So we repaired 24 door casing gaps and ten jamb gaps, while making it look like a deliberate upgrade that worked beautifully with the overall remodel.
The same problem impacted the newel post at the bottom of their staircase. The gap beneath it caused it to look like it was simply levitating there in space. It was awful! Again, we custom machined a new piece to fill the gap so it looked like it was an original part of the installation, not an afterthought or repair.
(Pro Tip: š©š©š©If your flooring contractor doesn't tell you, in advance of signing the contract, that replacing your old carpet or thicker flooring with new, thinner flooring may result in gaps under the bottoms of your casings and jambs, that is a RED FLAG!! š©š©š© A reputable company will advise you of that, up front, so you can factor it into your choice of flooring style before making a final decision. For a **qualified** contractor, there is nothing "unforeseeable" about this.)
